Supernatural Alphas

So... I said I'd let you guys know if I was going to be catching up on Supernatural so... I've caught up and here's my review of the first three episodes, followed by my review for the Alphas season finale.

Supernatural Season 8 Episodes 1-3 Review

     I spent Sunday night, after Once Upon a Time of course, catching up on Supernatural. I have to say, I think I like where this season is going. The show seems to be less dark and depressing than it used to be, which I like. I spent a good chunk of time laughing, which I liked.

     Character-wise, I'm interested in Benny's story. There's gotta be a reason he's so attached to Dean. Dean's head is back in the same, which is good. Sam seems to be back where he was during 1st season, wanting more than hunting. It was because of that characterization that I didn't really connect with him during the last few seasons. Kevin is something of a wet blanket despite his random bad-assery with the tricked-out church. Kevin's mom was awesome. She's not at all what I was thinking she'd be. Crowley... is Crowley. He's awesome. I do want Cas to come back, though. It's sad he seems to be stuck in Purgatory. I can't wait to see what they do with that.

     I will not be doing Initial Reactions for Supernatural, though I will continue watching. Reviews will probably be random, impromptu, and much like this one unless something comes up I feel the need to talk/rant about.

Alphas - "God's Eye" - Review

     I am of the opinion that there's nothing really to discuss about this episode of Alphas. Say, a bit. Theorize, probably. But nothing really to discuss. This episode was essentially lots of action that went by in a blur.

     We got three guys being knocked out/killed by the Alpha Gadget. One of them gets up and freaks out because of his new ability. Kat and Rachel find the guy and figure out they need Skylar. Skylar fixes the problem. New problem arises. Rosen walks around talking to a hallucination of Dani.

     Gary's mom wakes up. Gary helps Rosen ineffectually. Team gets shot at. Skylar finds out she can't fix the problem within a problem. Hicks shoots Parish. Rosen gives the super annoying "If we kill him, we're no better than him" speech. Everyone gets knocked on their asses by the Alpha Gadget in Grand Central Station.

     Except Gary.

     So we're left with the questions:

• Which humans become Alphas and which die?
• Are our team going to wake up with super abilities?
• Why was Gary unaffected.

      Guess we'll just have to wait until next season to figure it out. I think Gary's ability or his autism has something to do with him being unaffected by the Alpha Gadget. I can't wait to find out. Like I said, gotta wait for it. Hope they have a next season, because Alphas got really good during this season.

Alphas Go To Downton Abbey

I think I need to stop making up random titles based on what I'm talking about, they just keep getting more ridiculous. But anyway... if you haven't seen last night's episode of Alphas ("Need To Know"), there will be spoilers. I'm going to attempt to review the first season of Downton Abbey without spoilers, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen. So... just be aware that there may be spoilers.

Alphas - "Need To Know" - Review

     I suppose it was inevitable that I would grow to absolutely despise Dr. Lee Rosen. It seems the leaders of the "good guys" tend to fall down the rabbit hole of the Dark Side rather than stay on the side of good. I was really, really disappointed that Lee, Nina, and Hicks would resort to torture. And yes, I know Rachel was participating, but I'm not really counting her because she begged off when Rosen dropped down the rabbit hole. I understand that there wasn't a lot of time to get the information they needed, but torture should never be an option. The information it yields is unreliable and possibly twisted.

     I quite liked the parts with Skylar and Zoe/Digit. The way Parish's people were keeping them under control was not what I expected. Or rather, it wasn't as simple as I thought it was. I'm glad Gary found them and I'm glad they're back with the good guys.

     I'm excited to see what happens next week. Parish's plan looks interesting and I wonder how many people will be turned into Alphas or outed as Alphas when the plan comes to fruition... if it does, of course.

Downton Abbey - Season 1 - Review

     While not exactly my normal TV-watching fare, I was turned on to Downton Abbey by "The Three Who Rule" over at Radio Free Skaro. As they generally have good taste in TV, I thought I'd give it a go and I'm so very glad I did.

     Downton Abbey follows the lives of the Crawley/Grantham family and their servants. The season was seven episodes of brilliance set initially in 1912 and ending in 1914. Each of the characters was brilliantly fleshed out and I found myself attached to the ones you're supposed to be attached to and hating the ones causing trouble. All of the actors are brilliant, bringing their characters to life with apparent ease.

     For those who've followed the Harry Potter series, Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) plays Dowager Countess Violet Grantham. For those who've watched Doctor Who, Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones) plays Mrs. Isobel Crawley.

     I originally thought the story itself was going to bore me, as it swirls around an inheritance and therefore politics, but I was pleasantly surprised to be sucked into it all. Downton Abbey is truly a wonderful period drama. The first season is available on Netflix (where I watched it) and I assume on DVD as well.

Uhm... not really much to say in this section. I've started back up watching Merlin... which I'm not sure is going to keep my attention... and I should, barring any unforeseen happenings, have initial reactions for Arrow up tomorrow after it airs.

Need To Know About the Imp and Lady of the Lake

Hey guys! Twitter crashed... so that's fun. I just finished watching tonight's Alphas. It was fun. Today's blog post is going to be my Initial Reactions to tonight's Alphas and reviews for Grimm and Once Upon a Time. If you haven't seen the most recent episodes, you need to leave this post right now. SPOILERS ABOUND.

Alphas - "Need To Know" - Initial Reactions

• It's Adam! With a pumpkin hat.
• Fresh air with an explosion on the side.
• Oh my God, Parish gasps like Jack Harkness!
• DC sometimes is ridiculous.
• Lots of meds for what? And that's a lot of beds, dude.
• And he's gonna go do it anyway.
• Kat has short problems. Lol.
• Of course there's a bomb. See, this is why you have decoys.
• Damn, Mitchel's gone.
• Mitchel's learned how to block... or not.
• So now Mitchel's himself for the first time in a long time. Good.
• That's a bit ruthless there, Rosen. Just because she'll forget doesn't mean it's right.
• And Hicks gets to hit the guy.
• That's some weird chain things there...
• You've gone and triggered something there, Nina.
• Lol, Gary.
• Nice plan there, Gary, except Skylar doesn't get it.
• Skylar's been mind-fucked. Woohoo.

Grimm - "The Bottle Imp" - Review

     Okay so... I figured out it was the girl before it was revealed. I didn't think the dad was responsible for any of what went on, he was too freaked and then too calm. I'm also pretty sure the little girl is possessed by something. Otherwise, what was the significance of the episode title? Bottle Imps are traditionally notorious for causing insanity... or was it mischief? Either way...

     Munroe and Rosalee have managed to be cute even over the phone. I totally saw Munroe messing up the recipe coming. It was too good an opening for them not to take it in that direction. I like that Hank's been introduced to the trailer. His reaction to Nick's ogre-gun was very Hank. Juliette making more overtures toward Nick is nice, although I was expecting more between her and Renard. Guess that's going to have to wait. Also, Nick's dream at the beginning was obviously a dream before it was revealed that it was. Juliette was too calm about remembering crazy stuff for that to be a realistic reaction.

     I don't really have anything else to say about this episode. I liked it. It was a solid character/story arc building episode.

Once Upon a Time - "Lady of the Lake" - Review

     I'm really enjoying this season so far. I do wish, however, that Henry would stop being all "secret missions" and "annoying kid" all the time. He needs to be dialed back a bit. After all, he did almost die this episode because he was being stupid. She was an evil queen, Henry, she's going to have deadly stuff in her vault. Duh.

     The Fairytale Land flashback story was brilliant. I want more back-story on Lancelot and I'm disappointed he's dead in the present. It was nice seeing Charming's mother again. She's so sweet and I think she managed to become a surrogate mother to Snow despite the short amount of time they had together. I'm sorry she's dead.

     The Fairytale Land present story's shaping up to be pretty cool, too. Although, the ogre's don't seem all that bad, but I guess they might be akin to the Future Bats from Primeval... only bigger. The scene where Snow kills the ogre was awesome. She's so badass, even in a pink cardigan. I thought the heart-to-heart between Snow and Emma was a bit forced. Also Mulan randomly proclaiming Snow the leader was rather quick. I'm glad Aurora's going to channel her anger into helping out. Maybe she'll become another badass princess like Snow, she certainly needs to stop being "I'm not exactly dressed for the forest" girl. Speaking of which, what was with her confusion over Emma's jacket? Emma had been wearing it the entire time and it's not like jackets are a foreign concept in Fairytale Land... though it was slightly funny.

     Time to talk about the villains. Cora is seriously evil. Like, a few steps up from Regina. It's like she lost every shred of decency, assuming she had any to begin with. King George... really just needed to have a talk with Charming and Snow instead of cursing Snow. Like, would it have killed him to reconcile things with them and bless their marriage? Snow's a princess and it's perfectly reasonable... but of course he had to be a jerk about it. We did find out at the end of the episode that he's in Storybrooke so here are my questions: Is he still holding a grudge against Charming? What are we going to see happen regarding him? Is George just going to let Charming and Henry alone? Is Regina going to side with Charming and Henry or with George? Is George going to try to reconcile with Charming?

     Yeah so... great episode. I can't wait for next week.

Would Wessen Be Considered Alphas?

Sort of an odd combination of things led to the title of today's review blog... essentially... my brain is weird. Don't consider the title an actual question. It's just weirdness combining Grimm and Alphas... which I'm about to review for ya. Spoilers for last week's episode of Grimm and this week's episode of Alphas start now. You've been warned. Also, there's a surprise in the Housekeeping section so be sure to read it.

Grimm - "Over My Dead Body" - Review

     So... I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this episode. Some of the parts were fun, some of them were sad, and some of them were just kind of there. I am, however, extremely glad Munroe didn't die. That would have just been... there are no words!

     Parts I liked: Angelina killing the rapist. Angelina saving Munroe's life even though it jeapordized the mission. Munroe buring Angelina. Angelina pretending to be a badass cop. Hank's reaction to Munroe's Wogue. Juliette making a romantic "get to know you" dinner for Nick. She's just so sweet.

     Parts I was "meh" on: The frigging blonde woman. She suddenly appears, has some kind of history with Renard, orchestrated the hit on Munroe, and... had no further explanation. Like, what? And the guys she hired... weird but overall kind of standard thug-types.

     Still not sure about this episode almost a week later so... yeah. That's pretty much it for Grimm until tomorrow... hopefully it'll be tomorrow.

Alphas - "If Memory Serves" - Review

     So, Kat is currently vying with Gary for my favorite Alphas character. I quite like how she handles herself, even if she doesn't know exactly who she is. I was just as shocked as she was that the woman in the blue dress was an actress from a commercial. It was heartbreaking to see how she reacted to that and to killing someone. I'm glad she's made it so she won't forget.

     Gary's reactions in the hospital were just... interesting I hope his mom doesn't die from these strokes, that would be horrible.

     I really didn't like Rosen in this episode, but I can't really put my finger on why.

     Overall, I enjoyed the episode although it's not one of my favorites. I thought it was a good character building thing for Kat and I'm glad some interesting information about Parish came out of it. I really hope he's gotten rid of soon.

Crashed Through Alphas

Today was spent watching Grimm and Alphas. I'll be reviewing Grimm and Once Upon a Time tomorrow. Today, it's time for Alphas. The following are my initial reactions. There might be a review after and there will definitely be SPOILERS starting... now.

"Falling"

• Oh no! Mixing drugs and Alpha abilities, whatever shall we do?
• Rachel's so cute!
• Rosen, your video footage sucks.
• Awkward...
• Kid's inherited Dad's ability.
• Ah, Gary...

"The Devil Will Drag You Under"

"Life After Death"

• Good guys who're planning to kill the bad guy. Nice.

Review

This is probably going to be more of a string of final thoughts, but I'm calling it a review anyway. I really enjoyed these last three episodes. I think seeing them one after the other lessened the emotional impact of things like Dani's death. I found I don't really like Parish. Like, really don't like him. Usually, with villains, I can sympathize with them a bit and understand where they're coming from. Parish... not so much. I'm disappointed by that.

I'm glad Rachel and John are working things out with their relationship. Should be fun to see how that continues to develop. I was highly amused by Gary and the baby in "Life After Death." I'm also incredibly proud of the fact that Hicks and Rosen seem to be planning Parish's death. Makes a nice change from good guys who aren't willing to permanently rid themselves of the bad guys. If they don't end up killing him... I'll be disappointed.

A Bunch of Reviews

(WARNING: This Post Contains Spoilers for Warehouse 13 and Alphas)

Hello there, my darling readers! I'm very, very sorry about not blogging last night. I was just soooo exhausted by the time I got time to actually blog, it just wasn't happening.

I spent almost all day yesterday hanging out with my best friend, H-chan, watching stuff. We watched El Cazador de la Bruja and Once Upon a Time. We've always watched random Anime and I made it my mission to hook H-chan on Once Upon a Time. I succeeded.

El Cazador de la Bruja

El Cazador is a pretty awesome Anime and a lot of fun to watch with a friend as there's lots to make fun of. The main characters are Nadie the Bounty Hunter and Ellis the Bounty. It's not immediately clear as to what's up with Ellis and why there are people spying on the pair, but it's slowly revealed and explained. The plot is essentially: There's somewhere Ellis needs to go and Nadie has promised to take care of her so Nadie takes her there. Along the way, there are some recurring characters who are both funny and creepy; most notably L.A. He's so, so creepy and he's obsessed with Ellis. We haven't finished the series yet, but I can't wait to find out what exactly is going on and what Ellis is being drawn to. I highly recommend El Cazador de la Bruja to anyone who's a fan of Noir, Madlax, and .hack//SIGN.

Once Upon a Time

Watching Once Upon a Time with H-chan is actually my second time watching through the series and it makes watching a bit... interesting, as knowing what happens skews the way you watch stuff. I really, really love this series and I can't wait till the second season starts. The plotting is just the right amount of intricate. The costumes are gorgeous. And I love the retelling of "classic" fairy tales and other such stories. The elements of the story come together in a way that ensnares the mind and makes you just want more. If you've always had a bit of a problem with the whole "Happily Ever After" ending and bland characters of Disney movies, I recommend you give Once Upon a Time a watch. The stories are fleshed out a bit more and the characters actually have personality. As I'm writing this, the second season is coming up in just a couple of weeks and I'm adding it to the list of shows I'll review and react to.

Warehouse 13: "Endless Wonder"

I loved this episode.  Just flat-out loved it. I wasn't too keen on Deb for most of the episode, but her turn-around at the end made me like her a little. Brother Adrian is turning out to be much more creepy that I thought he was going to be. I really don't like that someone who's apparently working for good is quite willing to kill innocent people just to prove a point. I wish Artie would just tell him what went down and maybe he'd understand... frankly, I think he deserves the "grave danger" he told Artie about at the end of last season. Claudia and Steve were wonderful, as always. I was stared at my TV for an entire commercial when I thought they'd been killed. I don't know why I thought they'd actually die, but... ya know... Steve already did. I really wanted to slap Pete for half the episode. Like, seriously, dude, keep it in your pants! Myka was brilliant, as always. Didn't have much to do this episode that wasn't completely normal so... yeah. I'm also extremely glad that the Warehouse was not revealed to the senator and business guy. I've never liked the mixing of business/government people and the people who actually know what they're doing. It always ends badly for someone. I gasped and grinned and did a little chair dance when HG appear at the end of the episode. She totally made my day.

Alphas: "Gods and Monsters"

Mmm... not too totally sure about this episode... I understand that Jason was lonely and all, but he really didn't need to do a flip-flop on his decision. Like, the SWAT guys really weren't that creepy and they just stood there so... meh. I was very glad to see Kat back. She's quickly become one of my favorite characters. Stanton Parish... he's like that one guy from Heroes mixed with that other guy from Heroes... the second and third season "baddies." Unaging, manipulative, and supremacist-y pretty much sums up Parish. I don't like him and I don't like how he decided to just control Jason all of a sudden. Yes, the kid's power is valuable, but you're really willing to let people die because you don't trust your allies? Seriously? Yeah... two days later and I'm still not entirely sure where I stand with this one...

Completely Initial Reactions

Anyone else annoyed that Grimm's not on tonight? I'm very sad about it. People keep messing with my schedules!

Anyway... I have for you some initial reactions, otherwise known as: My Twitter is hooked up to my Facebook and people get annoyed when I post spoilers so I don't live-tweet, but I live-type. So here are my initial reactions to tonight's Alphas and Warehouse 13.

Gods and Monsters - Alphas

• Yay for high school dances…
• The boyfriend is a douchebag. Typical.
• Obvious mind control is obvious. Creepy mind control is creepy.
• I really, really like Kat.
• He’s kinda like Tag from the New Mutants comics, with added mind control.
• Even Dr. Rosen in creeped out
• Well hello, Parish.
• Why you gotta start threatening people? Threats made people uncomfy.
• Nooooo, it’s just the one person who’s gonna die.
• Creepy staring is creepy.
• Good boy, you’re totally wrong and now you gotta deal with it. Except now you’re being stupid.
• Hicks saves the day again…
• They are gonna follow that van FOREVER.
• Lol, Kat.
• Distraction, distraction. Very classic.
• Didn’t expect the stabbing, though.
• Nope, never seen that before. – Sarcastic Tone
• His mind is the high school gym... interesting.
• Mind meld!
• Parish jumped out a window…
• When did they get to be okay? I feel like I missed something.
• That would have been a better reveal if they hadn’t shown us she was spying.

Endless Wonder - Warehouse 13

• Pete would knock over everything.
• That just sounded painful.
• Claudia and Steve are amusing and make me giggle.
• Don’t give it back to him, idiot.
• What is up with Myka’s top?
• So, Artie goes from being slightly afraid of Claudia to being really worried about her. Hmmm…
• And of course he slept with her.
• That’s not investigating, Pete. That’s being a ridiculous guy.
• Could you sound anymore announcer-y, Pete?
• I really don’t like this woman…
• No, Pete, it WAS the worst one night stand ever.
• Please let him me way-layed by someone. Companies getting involved in this stuff is just stupid.
• That effect is awesome.
• Pete’s in trouble.
• You’re so awkward, Pete.
• There’s a bomb… so not good.
• Ooooh shit. Bad commercial break! Bad!
• Wow, seriously? That’s ridiculous.
• Maybe she’s not too bad…

Alphaville and the Great Website Redesign

Hello, my dear readers, I'm back... again. This time, I'm hoping for longer than just the odd post every couple months.

SPOILERS

My original intention with this post was to give a review of the first three episodes of Season 2 of Alphas until I realized... there have been six episodes so far this season. Not sure how I missed that but... meh. So here's my very brief review of the first five episodes: I liked them. They're fun. Dr. Rosen is shaping up to be a much better Professor X than Professor Charles Xavier. And that's without powers. Nina... has issues, but it looks like she's working through them. I like Kat. I think Stanton Parish is going to be a nice counterpoint to the "Government regulated" Alpha squad. Also, Section 6 or whatever reminds me very much of the Marvel Universe's Neverland Ranch...

Alphaville Review

I cannot fully express my joy that Summer Glau got to come back and play a not-crazy person. She's absolutely believable as a mother and I absolutely love little Digit. I also loved Gary in the episode, finding out that he can read more than just the signals of the "civilized" world. I fully believe he would have had problems moving into that cabin he wanted... which makes me glad Alphaville got burned down.

Speaking of Alphaville, I enjoyed the thought of creating a new Alpha-centric town. It's much better than "Mutant Town" of the Marvel Universe which was just a section of New York. I really do hope the team gets an opportunity to visit another Alpha town or community.

Rachel's ability being turned up a notch was interesting... but I really don't see why the production team decided to do that. Rachel seems like an odd choice for a power-up. I did love the fire-starter guy, though. His souped up power was amazing.

All in all, I loved this episode. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Can't wait to see what these guys come up with next.

Housekeeping

So... Webs has decided they need a new website builder. I'm not sure I like it, at least as far as blogging goes. Therefore, the blog section of the my website will be going dormant as of... well, today. I'm going to link any and all parts of my "Reviewed" page to their respective Blogger blog posts instead of the Webs ones. The rest of the site is getting a bit of a redesign, which Webs' new format makes it a tad easier to do.

I guess that's pretty much it so...
