Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - "FZZT" - Review

Intro

Okay, I'm just gonna stop apologizing for late posts. This is, after all, the era of watching TV whenever we want so... if you're reading this review, I'll assume you're interested in my views and we'll just forget the fact that I'm really behind and getting even more behind as I type.

Review:

Although I hadn't yet gotten around to reviewing this episode, I listened to some podcasts about it. I mention this because I was somewhat amused by the inability of people to pronounce this episode's title. I was less amused when I went on IMDB today and found the title included periods between the letters, like it was an acronym... which it's not. "FZZT" is a visual sound effect like the ones used in the comics. This particular sound effect describes the sound electricity makes when moving from one object to another. I thought this was obvious, but apparently I was wrong.

Now that the title's been discussed/explained in entirely too much detail, we can get into the meat of "FZZT." We got a very interesting Avengers tie-in via the Chitauri helmet and virus. While I didn't know about the virus at first, I quickly figured out that whatever was going on with the floating guys was going to affect Simmons. After all, there was obviously something wrong with her in the previews and she got obviously shocked by the first floating guy. I'd originally suspected mind control of some sort, but AoS continues to disappoint on that front. I did, however, enjoy the virus aspect. To make matters worse, we had the added tension of Joss Whedon's tendency to kill off characters so there was no guarantee Simmons was going to live through this.

That said, I had a lot of fun watching Fitz and Simmons struggle working apart and then excel working together. I thought how they dealt with Simmons' possible death was pretty realistic. It was also heartbreaking to watch. I cried. It was also touching to see the rest of the team caring for Simmons in their own ways. Their relief after Ward saved Simmons was pretty darn awesome.

I thought the parts with Coulson were interesting. He's really not feeling himself and feeling the weight of his death. I'm happy he's trying to figure out what's wrong with himself, even if it didn't yield the results anyone was expecting. I especially enjoyed the scene between Coulson and May at the end of the episode. Her advice to him was incredibly poignant.

• Was not expecting Ward to make fun of Gemma making fun of him.
• That's a pretty awesome scar there, Coulson.

Agents of SHIELD - "Girl in the Flower Dress" - Review

Intro

Finally got this review done! I think I've been promising it since Wednesday... Ah well.

I think it's just gonna be this one tonight, folks. I'm still recovering from work today and I still have to watch a bunch of stuff and review a bunch of stuff and do Halloween events on lots of websites... I might not have a life, but my littlest sister is coming into town this weekend so my time will be further taken up by family stuff. I promise I'll catch myself up at some point... Hopefully before the end of this TV-watching Season. Maybe over Christmas break... (Nope, not being PC about that)

Review:

"Girl in the Flower Dress" felt like a big old setup, at least in terms of Skye. Surprisingly, though, Skye was setup from the outside rather than the inside. I quite enjoyed that little twist. The B Plot of the episode following Chan Ho Yan/Scorch was interesting, but mostly fun because of his powers.

Scorch is essentially a Mutant without outright being called a Mutant because ABC doesn't have the rights to Mutants of some such nonsense. I thought Scorch's powers were fun. It was interesting to see how he could survive the amount of burns after his platelets were injected back into his system. However, platelets are what makes your blood clot and have nothing to do with your skin so... that was just plain weird. I thought the switch from street performer to villain was a bit quick, but I didn't really mind that. Scorch is, after all, a one-time villain, presumably anyway. As for Raina... I don't like her, which was the point but I thought it needed to be said.

So... Skye's reasons for joining up with S.H.I.E.L.D. were revealed. Or at least, I'm gonna assume they have. It's always the search for the parents that drives people into infiltrating "secret" or government entities, isn't it? Not to say that's not an acceptable reason, but still...

I quite liked how much growth we got to see in Skye. I suppose it was kind of hard to tell until she got put next to someone she used to be really close with, ideals-wise. It was really heartbreaking to see how low Skye got during this episode when everyone turned against her.

It was quite interesting to see the team react to Skye's apparent betrayal. I think Fitz's worldview is too black and white for his own good. I liked that Simmons was more understanding and open-minded about the situation. I thought Ward and May essentially giving Skye the silent treatment was in character for them. And... Coulson's reaction was weird to me. Yes, he took a chance on bringing Skye in. Yes, she apparently betrayed his trust. No, that wasn't much of a stretch for her. No, he didn't need to get to seriously angry about it.

Overall, another solid episode by the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. team. I liked the return and development of the Centipede villain. Can't wait to see what they do with that.

Miscellaneous Notes:

• Skye and Ward playing Battleship was fun, though the lighting was really dark.
• S.H.I.E.L.D. has one of those Skyping robots!
• This is weird, but I appreciate that Skye did not have matching underwear.

Review:

Personally, I was really disappointed to find out that Akela wasn't telepathic. However, that didn't subtract anything from my enjoyment of "Eye-Spy." On the contrary, I very much enjoyed what they did without the use of telepathy. The in-eye camera was a really cool concept. Although it turned out fairly badly for Akela and "The Englishman," I look forward to the technology possibly be used in the future.

I'm not sure how I feel about the red-masked people turning out to be not at all creepy or cult-ish. I think, though, that I'm going to chalk that up to being Marketing's fault and move on.

I thought Akela was an interesting character. I didn't get an exact read on her personality, but she seemed alright, as far as that goes. I liked how she attempted to protect May and Coulson by either not looking at them or at least not doing so directly. I also liked that she noticed something was up with Coulson. I very much wonder what exactly it was that made her notice it.

I really love the different team dynamics we got here. First Coulson and Ward splitting off and leaving Fitz-Simmons and Skye together. Coulson and Ward make an interesting little duo, though I was much more interested in the nerd-trio we got. Fitz is adorable. There are not two ways around that. I like that Simmons mothers him and Skye treats him as a sort of younger brother. At least, that's what I gleaned from their interactions. The scene at the very end with Fitz cheating at poker through Skye's use of the eye-tech was very cute. It made me laugh. Skye and Ward working together more now was fun. The best part of that was, of course, the argument over seducing the guard.

I want to touch a little bit on May. I thought it was interesting the way she was placed standing over the loading bay of the Bus when the team came straggling in. She obviously has some authority issues where Couslon comes in. It makes me wonder about their history. That said, I enjoyed their chemistry.

But uh... yeah... that's pretty much all I've got for "Eye-Spy." Another solid AoS episode and next week looks extremely interesting. I figured they'd let that particular plot thread go for a while longer, but I guess not.

Miscellaneous Notes:

• Fitz sucks at naming stuff. It's awesomely adorable.
• I love watching Chloe. Her expressions in the background of shots are just great.
• I like that Coulson doesn't appreciate Ward's "humor" at naming the van.
• Can't wait to see if we see the organization behind Akela's eye-camera.

Intro

Okay, I've got a couple things real quick and then we'll get to the review. First: I'm still sick. I'm also worse than yesterday so any mistakes, omissions, misspellings, or whatever are completely on me and aren't normal when I'm healthy.

Secondly, I forgot Supernatural was premiering last night and so forgot to mention I'd be reviewing that today in addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The Supernatural review will probably be posted a few hours after this one because I haven't written it yet and... yeah... I'm sick.

Review:

I applaud AoS for putting out another very solid episode. This time around we got more of a focus on Skye. We got to see the beginning of her training, her cleverness, and a few of her vulnerabilities. I was very impressed with Chloe Bennet's acting all through "The Asset."

I wasn't as impressed with the villain of the piece, and I hesitate to actually label Quinn a villain. He was entirely too self-absorbed. But I suppose he fulfilled his purpose in giving Dr. Hall something to do. On that count, Dr. Hall was a very interesting character. He was very much the scientist, though more aware of the consequences of his work than a lot of scientists in media tend to be. I like that Dr. Hall knew his invention would only be used to make Quinn more money. I like that Dr. Hall decided to destory his invention instead of let Quinn use it. I like that he made the decision to sacrifice everything in order to destory his invention, though I'm glad he didn't end up taking everyone else with him in the end. I'm looking forward to seeing what becomes of his character down the line. No, that's not a spoiler. Hall was clearly reaching out of the Gravitonium ball at the very, very end of the episode.

Okay, back to actually discussing Skye. I really enjoyed the one-on-one scenes between Skye and Ward. Their relationship is developing very organically, which I like. I also enjoyed how their conversations usually started out light and ended up going on a more serious, personal bent. I'm glad Skye and Ward have found some common ground. They definitely need it. I think my favorite bit was actually when Ward rescues Skye from Quinn's goons. The way Skye just sort of clung to him for a second made me smile. And no, I'm not shipping them.

I was also really impressed with Skye's twisty improved plan after being caught by Quinn. I have no doubt she was originally planning to take him up on his job offer, but I'm really glad she double crossed him instead. The whole thing came off as smoothly as it could have, given the circumstances.

As for the rest of the team, I loved seeing more of Fitz and Simmons nerding out. I find Fitz's freak-out moments really endearing. It was also quite fun to see May getting itchy to be in the field, despite her initial insistence on a non-combat role. I'd really like to know what her relationship with Coulson was like prior to AoS. She's clearly more fond of him than it originally appeared. As for Coulson himself, I'll discuss that in the Theories section.

So... yeah. Another solid episode. I'm really enjoying the AoS ride so far. Can't wait to see what turns up next week.

Miscellaneous Notes:

• That Gravitonium gadget acted suspiciously like a telekinetic person, rather than a gadget. That threw me.
• Gotta love villains with giant doom machines.
• David Conrad's voice sounds an awful lot like Tahmoh Penikett's voice. I found that a bit disorienting.

Theories:

Today's focus: What's up with Coulson?

I think Coulson is either a clone or a Life Model Decoy. Both options are supported by Coulson's death in The Avengers, his lack of muscle memory with the gun, and the thing about Tahiti. His memories could have been transferred to either a clone or LMD via either a telepath or really advanced tech.

I think the LMD option is more likely than the clone route, though. I've pretty much been sold on that by the very first AoS episode. Coulson ducks backward really quickly in order to duck the van door. LMDs have some degree of super speed, so there's that explained.

Not really much else to go on at this point, but these are the most likely explanations given this is the Marvel Universe.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - "0-8-4" - Review

Intro

Because I know there's people waiting to see how my interview went and because I know there are people who don't follow me on either Twitter or Facebook, I'm gonna start with that. I think my interview went swimmingly, especially since it was my first face-to-face interview. I felt it wasn't nearly as awkward as it could have been. I'm not sure how prepared I was for parts of it as I could have been, but I blame the internet for focusing mainly on certain questions rather than ones that are less hard to answer. I'm actually really hoping I get that job, it sounds like it would be a lot better fit for me than I thought.

And now we're off to the S.H.I.E.L.D. review, because I know most of you are really here for that.

Review:

I was extremely impressed with the second episode of AoS. I'm pretty sure it satisfied anyone who was looking for this show to be more action-based than the last episode. This was the episode that put the team under fire and galvanized them, at least for the length of the episode. I'm sure they still have many many kinks to work out.

I fell in love with Fitz-Simmons this episode. We got a sort of showcase of what they bring to the team. I loved that Simmons is essentially a Willow-style babbler. I thought Fitz ended up being really endearing. I very much enjoyed his argument with Ward.

Speaking of Ward, I'm starting to warm up to him. I think he's still incredibly cocky, but he's got a squishy center under all that. I really enjoyed that, even though he was doing his black-ops thing while he was talking to Skye, he was really listening to what she had to say. It was cool of him to not only listen, but apply what she said later.

I'm still liking Skye. I'm glad she's making a bit of headway into integrating herself into the team, despite not having an official function. I was amused by the way she dealt with her confused situation and I like her worldview. She's quite right, the way social media is bringing people together is kind of beautiful when you think about it. Also, apparently Skye is a lot higher up in the Rising Tide than we thought... which sort of makes sense. I do kinda wonder what her objective is, ya know, aside from infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D.

As for Agent May... she was cool. I really want to know more about this "Cavalry" thing. I mean, I get that it has a lot to do with her kick-ass-ness, but I'm pretty sure there's more to it. I wanna hear the stories Fitz-Simmons were talking about.

As for the actual story... I liked it. I found the way Reyes took over the plane to be realistic, though I'm kind of wondering what that would actually have meant for international relations if she'd succeeded. I'm not sure I buy the raft sealing the hole in the plane, but it worked for my suspended disbelief while I was watching. I also really enjoyed Coulson... who I should have talked about before, but obviously didn't.

Coulson has shown that, despite not being especially hands-on with his team at the moment, he knows they can join together when push comes to shove. I like that he's got a thing with collecting old gadgets. I have a feeling those are going to come in handy at some point. You could almost say that's been sign-posted. I was really impressed he figured out Reyes' plan and was able to shoot it off like he did. That was great. I'm also impressed with Coulson's rope skills. I couldn't even see myself messing with knots behind my back the way he did. I'm also very glad he saved Reyes. A lot of other people would have let her fall out of the plane.

Overall, another spectacular outing for AoS. Oh, but wait! The very last scene! OMG, I was laughing to hard. I love what Samuel L. Jackson has done with the Nick Fury character. He's authoritative and hilarious at the same time. My favorite bit, besides the last line, was the bit about the bar. He was really sad the bar got destroyed. I giggled.

But anyway... another great AoS episode. I'm really looking forward to what the team, in show and behind the scenes, come up with for next week.

Miscellaneous Notes:

• The monument had some really kick-ass CG. Fitz-Simmons taking selfies in front of it was amusing.
• Loved the shots from Sleepy's POV.
• Not sure why Ward felt the need to flip off the steps to plant the knock-down device in the ground, but it was cool.
• I loved it when everyone took a step back from the 0-8-4 at once.
• Commandante Reyes reminds me of Suzi from Torchwood a little.
• So... we've lost Sneezy. Was I the only one who noticed that?
• The scene at The Slingshot reminded me a bit of the very last scene at the end of Buffy.

Review:

In my humble opinion as an avid TV watcher and reviewer, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. "Pilot" was stellar. Random dangling plot threads from The Avengers were tied up nicely, though with a bit of mystery. The characters were set up well, both those who appeared in the Marvel movies and those who didn't. The world around them was fleshed out well. Overall, we got a very solid "Pilot."

First and foremost, I have to talk about Coulson. I thought Clark Gregg did a great job reprising the roll. I liked the way Coulson's reappearance was explained, though I wonder what Hill was talking about and hope that gets explained at some point. It makes a very nice little mystery that I sincerely hope doesn't get dropped. I also really liked the way Coulson was portrayed. He's a nice mix of "secret agent" and caring human being. I like that he cares more about helping people than collecting them.

So far I like the team of Fitz and Simmons. They're wonderfully quirky and nerdy. Yes, those are two separate things. The way the pair interact with each other amuses me. I'm not entirely sure where I stand on Ward and May. They're cool, but I don't quite have a handle on them yet.

Skye kind of reminded me of a cooler, hacker-y version of Gwen Cooper from Torchwood... kind of. I just mean Skye is both in her element and out of her depth. She's different from Gwen in that she's full of that classic Whedon-y spunk. She's definitely got a lot more heart than Ward seems to. I really loved how she interacted with Coulson, Ward, and Mike. The bubbly nerdy-ness was awesome. I'm also intrigued by the fact that Skye seems to have deleted herself from a technology standpoint.

Last on my list of people to talk about is our antagonist for the episode, Mike Peterson. I thought J.August Richards really brought out the emotions of the character. Mike entered into the study-thing for all the right reasons, the effects of the study-thing just made him send up making the wrong decisions. He was extremely relatable in a way characters like Tony Stark and Thor just aren't. I'm glad he didn't end up dying at the end of the episode, though I totally fell for that fake out.

Miscellaneous Notes:

• S.H.I.E.L.D's tech was awesome and imaginative.
• Loved the nerd references. I caught Terminator and Snow White on first watch and a Harry Potter reference on the second.
• I love that Ftiz named his droids after the Snow White characters. It's cute.
• I was surprised and pleased that Lola flew.

Well look no further than the official site. I had a poke around and it's pretty cool. You will definitely need a computer or other device that can keep up with a lot of moving images and sound. I'm pretty sure the site runs on Flash so... make sure your device can handle that, too.

Nuzlocke Challenge - Day Twenty-Nine

Intro

Just off watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I loved it! I can't wait for next week! Heck, I can't wait to watch it again before I review it tomorrow. This time without baby screaming or interruptions or people at the door...

But this is a Nuzlocke Challenge post so... let's get on with that shall we?

Omega

So today I finished off my Mt. Ember run by running into a cave. Since I count inside places as different places from outside places, I caught a Machop. His name is Omega. I also fought a Geodude and two more Machop before getting out of the cave.

At the top of Mt. Ember sits the lovely Moltres. A Moltres who took two Power Points for every Yawn. A Moltres who used up all 11 of my Great Balls and all but one of my 22 Ultra Balls. A Moltres I was really worried about not catching. But I did. That's Legendary Bird Number Three in the bag. And in order... which I did not do on purpose.

???

Ms.Feather than flew us to Two Island where we climbed up Cape Brink. I caught a Psyduck and named her... I forgot what I named her, isn't that ironic? I forgot to write it down and now I'm kicking myself... But anyway, there's this Channeller who lives at the top of Cape Brink. She taught Frankie Hydro Cannon.

Artie

We took the Seagallop back to Vermillion City and then flew from there to Viridian City. Just off Viridian City is Route 22 were we faced off against Master. We trounced him soundly. I say "we" but Frankie and Bo did all the work. Izzy fought three Ratatta after that before we ran into a Mankey. I caught him and named him Artie.

Cam

We then began our journey through the gates of the Pokemon League. On the water there we ran into a Psyduck that Frankie Rapid Spinned out of existence. We then ran into a Fearow in the grass, which Frankie Bit out of existence. And finally we ran into a Primeape, which I caught. His name is Cam.

Next time: We brave Victory Road and flail as a good chunk of my team has issues with Onix.

Housekeeping

I am very much planning to review Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tomorrow. I am also planning on updating my earlier Sleepy Hollow review because I was in a hurry when I posted it and forgot some things. There will also be some updates to the "Lists" page and, of course, the "Reviewed" page.

Thoughts On Upcoming Fall Shows

Okay so... first thing's first, I'm not going to be doing Initial Reactions for The Vampire Diaries this evening.

Secondly, my reviews for the season finales of the CW shows and the Grimm Season 2 penultimate episode will most likely be done on Friday. Tonight I have babysitting to do and I won't really have time to review anything today. Not to mention, I'd rather review things in a mindset that's not distracted by other things.

I would also like to take a little time to talk about a few shows I'm looking forward to this fall. First, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I've never really been a big fan of S.H.I.E.L.D. but Joss Whedon's at the helm of this things so... I excited. I seriously can't wait for this thing to come out. I know people are going ape-shit over Agent Coulson being in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but a) they need to get over themselves, b) this is the Marvel universe and people don't have to stay dead, c) there's this lovely thing called a prequel, d) why the heck would Coulson NOT be in it? I guess my point here is: I'm excited to see Coulson back and I don't have a problem with the fact that he is back.

Second show I'm really looking forward to: Once Upon a Time In Wonderland. I saw the trailer yesterday and it's just amazing. I love Once Upon a Time and I love Alice in Wonderland, despite that it was written by a guy who was high on LSD... so... yeah... getting more of a take on Wonderland from the perspective of the Once Upon a Time crew should be excellent.

Third show: Dracula. To those who read my blog on a regular basis, my fan-girl-y-ness over vampires should come as no surprise. I have read the original Dracula novel and though I didn't love it, reinterpretation is a big thing with vampire stuff so... yeah. Also, there's the fact that I only recently found out about Dracula and who was in it. Jonothan Rhys Meyers of Tudors fame is going to be playing Dracula. He's an awesome actor and I can't wait to see how he portrays the... well... King of Vampires, I suppose. The other actor I'm really excited about is Katie McGrath of Merlin fame. She was excellent as Morganna and I can't wait to see what she does with the otherwise annoying character of Lucy Westerna. I've got mixed feelings on Jessica De Gouw playing Mina Murray. It might mean her character on Arrow, The Huntress, won't be coming back, which is sad, because I kinda liked Helena.

I will also, of course, be watching The Originals, if only to see whether or not I like it. My thoughts on that can be seen: HERE.

But yeah... that's pretty much it for that. My TV-watching, initial reactions schedule-y thing is gonna get a bit of a shake-up this fall. I know for a fact that Once Upon a Time In Wonderland is gonna be on at the same time as The Vampire Diaries so... yeah...
