The Host - Review

The Host - Review

The Host was an adaptation of the book by the same name. The Host was written by Stephanie Meyer. This should probably be kept at least a little bit in mind while watching the movie. That said, The Host was a pretty awesome movie. I say this having A) read The Host and B) seen The Host and C) being able to separate movie and book in my head.

It's honestly hard to say exactly what the movie's about without really saying anything spoiler-y. The movie follows human host Melanie Strider and the "Soul" who inhabits her, Wanderer/Wanda. Melanie gets essentially side-lined the entire time, being as she's taken over by Wanda the entire time. She's characterized primarily through memories and some through speaking to Wanda. Wanda gets the spotlight.

I really enjoyed this adaptation. It was very well done, cutting out parts from the book that didn't need to be there. It was also a much better adaptation than Twilight. And yes, a better love story than Twilight, just so we get that annoying meme out of the way.

I thought the way they did Melanie speaking to Wanda was awesome. Most of the time, there'll be an image, color, or action a character does to denote "mind-speech." In The Host, Wanda just talked to Melanie and Melanie was essentially a disembodied voice.

I also liked how Ian and Jared were portrayed. They seemed very realistic to me, though their rivalry wasn't as pronounced as it was in the book. At least from what I remember. It's been years since I've read The Host. I thought the visuals were great.

Also, I'm really tired, so I'm just gonna go ahead and stop here. Maybe I'll be back at a later date with more on that. Sorry.

Doctor Who - "The Rings of Akhaten" - Initial Reactions

• We get to find out where the leaf is from?
• Clara's parents?
• Doctor, you are such a stalker.
• How romantic.
• AWWWWWWW!!!!
• That's why no 11 in the book. Bad things happen, she leaves the ages out of her book.
• Time made of strawberries. Lol.
• That's a realistic reaction, for once.
• I love her.
• Not as hard to pronounce as everyone thinks it is.
• Basically, he doesn't know.
• Awesome alien world with alien-looking aliens on it!
• Not getting any of those names.
• Glowy blue food that tastes nasty.
• Lol, barking.
• Doreen?
• Psychometry!
• Good guard dudes who don't stop to explain things to the person who obviously doesn't know what's going on. Yay for some realism!
• Do not go into the obviously dark and scary part of town. That's ridiculous.
• But of course you must, because otherwise there'd be no episode.
• Interesting teleport system. Looks like what the Judoon used in Smith and Jones.
• I really, really like Clara.
• Lol, the TARDIS doesn't like her.
• Little girl with stage-fright. That's kind of refreshing.

Possibly The Most Hilarious Episode Of Grimm Ever

Hey look, I managed to do Initial Reactions for once this week! Yay! That means SPOILERS for tonight's episode of Grimm.

Grimm - "One Angry Fuchsbau" - Initial Reactions

• Second commercial break because babysitting happened.
• I think Juliette's memory things are interesting.
• I want to know what that lawyer is.
• I'm worried about Rosalee.
• Also, my cable's being all weird today so... yeah.
• Is the maid a Wesen?
• Seriously, what the hell is this guy? He's got telepathic powers, obviously.
• Nope, not suspicious at all creepy lawyer guy.
• Frog? It's cute.
• Eeeewww.
• Oh! He's one of those satyr thingies.
• More interesting backstory on the Verat.

Okay, yeah, that's not exactly giant, but, let's face it, I'm no Hulk.

Why am I a Giant Rage Monster, you might ask? Because The Vampire Diaries tonight is a rerun.

The one time in a couple weeks I manage to be all ready to watch TVD and do Initial Reactions, it's a rerun. For No Discernible Reason! Gah!

Rage Monsters aside, I have managed to watch and review last night's episode of Arrow. So if you haven't seen the episode, please leave the blog and come back later. The following review contains spoilers.

Oh! And there's a Housekeeping section with some announcement-y type stuff in it.

Arrow - "Unfinished Business" - Review

The very end of "Unfinished Business" was really creepy. I did not like the looks on either Merlyn's face.

I really enjoyed the flashbacks this time. Olly's training is much more interesting and doesn't jar as much as they other things have. Not to mention how much I love watching people be confused by Eastern training techniques. As they say, there's method to the madness. Also, I'm glad Olly couldn't completely draw the bow after just a day, or at least it seemed like a day, of water slapping. It takes time to build up that muscle strength.

I'm getting rather tired of Detective Lance hounding Olly and Tommy every other episode. Yes, it usually serves a purpose, but it's getting old. I'm also kind of tired of these super packed episodes. I can't properly get my thoughts about them together in a coherent order because they're all over the place.

I thought the twist on the Vertigo story was fun. I didn't suspect the Doctor until Olly had the thought about The Count never leaving the hospital. Interesting Olly didn't think of that before he got hit 'round the head. Also, wouldn't adding anti-psychotics to Vertigo sort of negate the psychotropic bits of it? I'm not at all up on how the different substances work or interact, but it sounds as if that would be the case. Hmmm... I'd research it, but my mind's numb enough as it is.

Final Batch of Thoughts:

• Looks like they used a hospital or hospital set from Supernatural episode. At least, the entrance looked really familiar.
• How has Fyers not found their hideout? It's a giant plane wreck and the island isn't that big, is it? It would make sense to go look for places the annoying pests would hide, right?
• Diggle doing his own investigating is interesting. Also, who's that Lila chick?

Housekeeping

I'm going to Dallas again this weekend. I may or may not get to watch Doctor Who on Saturday. I'm pretty sure that's the only show I'll miss since Once Upon a Time is also on hiatus/showing reruns.

I might be doing slice-of-life/trip blogs, but I'm not sure, so... yeah. I think that's pretty much it from me for tonight.

Should Have Been Arrow Initial Reactions

So here's the thing, sometimes, it's hard for me to remember that I have things to do outside my bedroom. I forget, for instance, that my TV shows come on at 7 PM. I miss them because I was doing internet-y things between 5 and 6. I don't realize that dinner is done because my sister doesn't tell me. I end up running down to eat because I'm so hungry I feel like I'm going to hurl.

This happens directly at 7.

Also, my sister was watching Pitch Perfect and I kinda got sucked in. Brittany Snow and Anna Kendrick do that to me. Didn't realize I'd missed Arrow until 7:58PM.

Essentially, I forgot it was Wednesday and that Arrow was on. I'm also not watching Supernatural tonight because of potential spoiler-y trailers for Arrow... and because I'm not in the mood for Supernatural.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: I'm sorry.

Yeah... that's pretty much it from me tonight. I'm in a weird emotional/mental state so... yeah. Hopefully I'll be back on track tomorrow.

The Vampire Diaries - American Gothic - Review

The Vampire Diaries - "American Gothic" - Review

I'm pretty sure Klaus leaned nothing from his fight with Caroline, just like always. Yeah, he kind points out that he's not being as much of an ass as he could be, but he's still being an ass. What's worse is Caroline apparently falling for it. Really? Why, Caroline? Your strong, no-nonsense personality is being ruined by the writing and it's annoying. You've gone from being one of my favorites to making me want to punch you.

Speaking of punching people, Katherine made an actual appearance in this episode and boy was she confusing. I think her problem is well presented in the episode by her dialogues with Damon and Elijah. She's presented herself in one way, but is apparently exactly the opposite only she doesn't know what that opposite is exactly. Also, she and Elijah as a couple was not something I saw coming. I find it a bit odd. Somewhat realistic, but still odd. I'm glad we didn't see their relationship any more than we did, it might have just ruined them both. I've always liked Elijah and Katherine so it was nice to see them back.

I had a lot of fun watching Elena and Rebekah work together. It was especially fun with Katherine thrown in there. I could watch that trip for a while and not get bored. But I guess less is more 'cause that's pretty much broken up.

Which leads me to Stefan. I'm reasonably sure Stefan's not actually going to go off by himself, even if Elena is "cured." He and Damon are being really ridiculous about getting Elena the cure. Like, monstrously ridiculous. I sincerely hope they'll just let Elena be now she's gonna be murdering people over it. True, her humanity's turned off, but it's clear -- she's made it clear on multiple occasions -- that she's done with attempting to become human again. The boys need to listen to her for a change. Let the girl make her own decisions because she's certainly earned the right to.

Quick Supernatural Review

I had a rough night last night. Was up until 3AM -- not because I wanted to be -- and then woke up at 9AM and actually got my butt out of bed. So, it's now 9PM. I just got back from grocery shopping. I'm tired. Oh, and my dog puked. lovely.

To sum up: no April Fools shenanigans from me.

However, I did manage to watch last week's Supernatural. Here's the

Supernatural - "Freaks and Geeks" - Review

Cute episode. I liked Crissy last time she showed up and I liked her this time, too. She's spunky and gives Dean someone other than Sam to worry about in a brotherly fashion. Crissy, Aiden, and Josephine worked very well together as a hunting team. They reminded me very much of Buffy, Xander, and Willow during the first season of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. It's a good dynamic and I'm kind of hoping we see them again at some point.

I thought it was really obvious Victor was the bad guy here. He gave me that vibe before we even saw him on screen. I was practically screaming at Sam not to go anywhere with him.

Other than that, this episode was very much filler. I kind of like the filler, but at this point, I want Sam and Dean to get back to the main storyline. I feel like this season would have been better if it was shorter and not the usual 20-something.
